AIDS 2006
(2007) Length 00:38:00
For a week in August 2006, Toronto, Canada, became a new frontline in the battle against HIV/AIDS, when the city hosted the XVI International AIDS Conference. Among the attendees there were the usual suspects - more than 20,000 delegates from the scientific, NGO, government, and business communities. However, the most remarkable feature of the XV1 AIDS conference was the meaningful participation of youth - over 1000 young delegates from over 30 countries attended the conference to speak out, take action and push for accountability in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Ricardo, Lina and Desmond are three of the youth delegates, each from a different country. Learn about their inspiring stories and the work they do in their respective countries, as they navigate through countless programs, panels and activities that were planned and executed by the Toronto Youth Force.
With over 1000 young leaders actively engaging with each other and with global leaders and other decision-makers, the youth are a force to be reckoned with at AIDS 2006. With their number growing from only 450 at Barcelona in 2002, the goal is to have 2000 youth delegates at the Mexico 2008 conference to continue to educate themselves, their peers and the world.
The key themes of the youth action are ACCESS, MONEY, TRUTH, SEX and LISTEN and the emphasis is to take these issues from rhetoric to action. The commitments desk in the youth area is a meeting place for leaders and artists and AIDS workers to commit to action which the youth promise to monitor.
In Sync Media partnered with TakingITGlobal with support from CIDA, to record the activities and follow the stories of the youth as they navigate through various panels. They meet ‘famous’ people like Alicia Keys and Stephen Lewis all showing their support and encouraging the youth to push the envelope.
